One First Unplugged—July 2024

Karen and Steve unpack the podcast microphones for an update on a chaotic three months on the home-front (and at the Supreme Court, too)

Off the bat, apologies from Karen for being MIA the last few months. It turns out that moving across the country and launching your own business doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for much else. For those who have no idea what we’re talking about, one of our goals when we launched “One First” in November 2022 was to have periodic check-ins from Steve’s better-half—about all-things in the legal profession, parenthood, and life more generally. Karen likes to call it “One First After Dark”; Steve calls it “Karen’s Corner.”

Instead of the latest (mostly-)monthly installment of Karen’s Corner, we thought we’d use the excuse of one child being away at camp to break out the podcast microphones for the first time since March for another (irregular) episode of “One First Unplugged” (or, if you prefer the old name, “In Loco Parent(i)s”).

Among other things, we talk about what we’ve been up to (hint: moving and starting new jobs!); the joys and difficulties of sending a kid to sleepaway camp for the first time; some impromptu (and uncomfortable) SCOTUS questions for Steve from Karen (e.g., “who’s your least-favorite justice right now?”); and Karen’s first (but not last) speed-camera ticket as a new D.C. resident—all with some Clueless references sprinkled throughout.
