A single vote by a single justice ended up handing the Election of 1876 to Rutherford B. Hayes; it just wasn't from the justice who was supposed to play that role
I was not expecting an essay on Christmas Day but I did enjoy reading it. Too bad some of today's Supreme Court justices aren't able to channel Justice Davis' integrity.
BushvGore, African American ballots discarded at more than ten times the rate of Caucasian ballots in FL, was a 21stC nail in the coffin of Reconstruction. From the Colfax Massacre (a voting riot) to the KKK's Hugo Black to 1960s dogs&firehoses to BvG's John Roberts, who once lent his imprimatur to the brief imprisonment of a crying (black) teen for eating a/one french fry inside a Metro station, the Confederacy has always been a far greater threat to domestic tranquility than King George, an external foe. As for liberal-icon Black (DennisvUSA), he was all for speech&petition&assembly, unless you dared to occupy the steps of his courthouse. Get the heck off of my juridical lawn.

The Sherman Minton Bridge is an important one in my home town of Louisville, connecting across the Ohio River to Indiana.

Liked this. BA, History.
Mone can't buy integrity, just everything else.
